Dmitry’s Closet is still on Amazon’s Bestseller List and Mae Reads Reviewed the Book

Hi Everyone,

Mae Reads reviewed Dmitry’s Closet on YouTube. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to hear from my fans. Take a look and check it out. Shout out to Mae.

Also, speaking of Dmitry’s Closet, it’s still on the Amazon’s Bestseller’s List. I’m so honored and so proud of your support.  You know, when I first published this book back in January of 2010, no one was writing bwwm mafia books.  So, people took it with mixed emotions.  I got my butt handed to me on a few of the reviews, LOL, but the overwhelming consensus was that readers wanted more and encouraged me to continue on this road, developing the Medlov Crime Family.  Here we are six almost seven years later, still doing what we do.  I’m in the process of working on two new Medlov books: Anatoly’s Retribution and Dmitry’s Redemption.  (I have the “R” thing going there).  Anyway, the reason that we are here is because of YOU.  You paid the money, spread the word, suggested the book to friends and in your book clubs, sent me emails of encouragement and most of all you believed in me.   I love you all. I thank you and I’m so humble and grateful for your blessings on my life.

Here’s to seven more years of The Medlov Crime Family!

Dmitrys Closet

I love every book that I write, specifically, because I write them for my readers.  I want to give my fans something to think on, whether good or bad.

Dmitry’s Closet was my first book under RiverHouse Publishing, the company that I own.  I was so nervous when I posted the book on Amazon in  2010 until I literally had a panic attack.  It wasn’t that I thought the book was good; it was me hoping that the book was good enough for my readers.

This morning, I received over 100 texts and emails telling me that Goodreads had selected my first work (1 out of 19 from RiverHouse) to be selected for their 100 Romantic Reads.  When I read the copy, it literally brought tears to my eyes. I was happy, and for me that is a really monumental word.  Happy.  I was actually happy!

I want to take the time to thank all of those fans who encouraged me, despite my lack of resources, to follow my dreams and who also supported me by purchasing and reading my work.  I want to thank all of those fans who loved the book but had critical critiques that I then used to help make the book better, and I want to thank all of those fans who after reading the book and know my handicaps, still gave me a 4.0 in stars or above.

When people take the time out of their lives to compliment you, don’t take it for granted.  This is coming from experience – not a high horse.  Relish in the compliments.  Learn from the critiques and grow to be a better person and a better author.

I look back at my first work, at the pain I put Laura Sitterson through by making her read it in its infancy stages, and it brings tears to my eyes, because we ushered in a new sub-genre.
Thank you for this recognition, Goodreads.  Thank you to all my fans and to all the writers who followed up with amazing stories of their own.

Sincerely,

Latrivia S. Nelson

bwSo, I’ve been listening and I’ve been trying to deliver.  And I know that you all are tired of having to sift through personal “stuff” on my pages just to get the basics.  Many of you don’t care what I ate for lunch or hear the chatter between “us” that goes on about why Dmitry’s eyes are a different shade of  blue from Ivan’s.  You just want to know when the next book is coming out, where the next book signing will be,  watch the latest book trailer or interview, post your questions and move on.

In fact, quite a few of you have suggested to me (to the point of asking Megan to get on it) to have a normal Fan Page on Facebook that you can “Like” without having to see 1,000 pictures of my children.  LOL. I get it.  And you know what???!!! It’s finally here.

WREG-TV Live@9 with Marybeth Conley and Alex Coleman

At 8:00 this morning, I wondered if I was going to be late.  I had to drop the kids off, traffic was heavy and all things Monday were happening.  But sure enough at 8:40 a.m., I pulled up on time to Channel 3 Drive, checked my lipstick and hair and ran into the building.

Once called back, I was greeted by the warm handshakes and hugs and sat down with Marybeth Conley and Alex Coleman, two of the city’s best reporters to talk about my book, The World in Reverse.

Countdown…action…

They start off by saying this…

The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov

Volume 1:

There just isn’t enough time for Dmitry.

America’s favorite fictional crime boss, Dmitry Medlov, had a very macabre start to his larger-than-life existence. In the short story series, The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov, volume one explores the inner-struggles of a rogue teen and his rocky rise in the feared organized crime group, the Vory v Zakone, before he became a billionaire underworld Czar.

Accidentally released from prison at the age of 18, Dmitry Medlov has 48 hours to assassinate a Ukrainian drug lord and get both he and his brother, Ivan, on a plane to London, before the authorities realize that the teenage hit-man is on the loose.

With the clock ticking, he hikes back to Moscow through a snow storm to discover that life has gone on without him. When he left, he was a feared earner for his underboss, Kirill. But as he returns, he finds that many things have changed including the lives of the people he cared for the most.

Baby brother Ivan isn’t a little boy anymore, and he’s showing signs of being a heartless sociopath. Following in his big brother’s footsteps, this bad boy can’t be trusted around his two most favorite toys – automatic machine guns and hunting knives. Trying to keep Ivan in line proves to be an on-going nightmare for Dmitry as he realizes that his brother might eventually be the end of him.

And while love was never on the agenda for Dmitry, the woman he cared deeply for has recently gotten engaged to a common wife beater. When Dmitry finds out, there might be one murder in Moscow for free.

While most kids are learning how to drive and going off to college at his age, Dmitry Medlov is cutting his teeth on murder, sex and mayhem.

This coming of age story is not like any other. Understand why the Medlov men became global threats through their feared brotherhood in the twelve-volume series that will take you jet setting around the world.

Volume 2:

It has been one year since their escape from Moscow, and Dmitry and Ivan Medlov are struggling to keep their small organized crime family together in London. Used to a communist culture, the boys are exposed to the new opportunities of a capitalistic society while trying to compete for business in the gun-trafficking industry.

Ivan wants more recognition and girls. As his behavior becomes more erratic and his temper becomes more dangerous, the sixteen-year-old bad boy experiences firsthand what it is like to live in another person’s shadow.

Dmitry wants more knowledge and power. When he’s not reading, strategizing or selling illegal guns, he’s working towards bigger and better relationships to get the Medlov name in the right circles. And the perfect storm is brewing at his doorstep. His contact with The Free Right, a women’s rights group, needs a large shipment of guns for their clandestine operations. However, she is also interested in what the blonde assassin is like in bed.

Drawn in by his beauty and charm, Emma introduces him to the head of her organization on the eve that the USSR falls. Only, the head is also the billionaire business mogul, Lady Catherine Hutton. Now with more access to munitions and more opportunities to get rich, Dmitry has an awful decision to make which will lead him one step closer to losing his brother and one step closer to becoming the world’s most notorious underworld boss.

Read the second volume in the Medlov Crime Family short story series that tells the intimate story of how one man built an empire that became untouchable.

Volume 3:

No crime boss has ever been as brilliant, beautiful and deadly as young Dmitry Medlov, and this Red Fella proves his affirmation in Volume 3 of The Chronicles, the longest of the short-story series.

Two years after meeting Lady Catherine Hutton and after fleeing Moscow to London, Dmitry has found the secret weapon to securing riches beyond his wildest dreams through a false marriage with British royalty.

Their quid pro quo arrangement was supposed to be a short-lived farce designed to give Lady Hutton one last thrilling sexual escapade before she met her untimely demise. However, in the process of teaching Dmitry how to be a real gentleman and making Catherine feel like a young woman again, the curious couple accidentally develops deep feelings for each other.

When Catherine realizes that Dmitry is in it for more than just the money, she leaves him a gift that rocks the foundations of the Medlov Crime Family – her entire estate worth over one billion pounds.

Dmitry’s new fortune, however, comes with a high price. The board of directors of the company he now owns wants him dead; one of the Vory elite “gifts” him the daughter of an Angolan war lord, and his brother, Ivan, falls for a woman who is as much of a sociopath as he is. There is also the matter of the media who declares him London’s most eligible bachelor.

While trying to steer away from the attention he’s getting country-wide with his new fortune, he finds himself drawn to the beautiful African scholar, Elsa, a student at Oxford who might just be able to help him stay in control of his multi-national corporation and remember what it’s like to actually “like a girl.” Passion strikes when the two are forced to live together while she reorganizes his business, but Dmitry wants more than sex from Elsa. He wants her home-country contacts.

Read the eleven-chapter, page-turning novelette that tops its two predecessors (Volume 1 & 2) with more action, romance, sex, murder and mafia.

Volume 4:

Now a widower, Dmitry Medlov’s life has completely changed. Wealthy beyond his wildest dreams, his aspirations quickly move from more money to more power. Only the power he seeks is held by the commanding and elusive Czar of the underworld, Boss Smirnov.
When Dmitry successfully talks the underboss and the all-knowing eye of the underworld, Khalid, into arranging a meeting between he and Boss Smirnov, he has no idea what troubles he is about to face. There are secrets that will be exposed in Prague that will forever change his young life again, leading to a decision that will rock the underworld for good.

Meanwhile, back in London, the city is buzzing about the deaths of the entire board of directors of Dmitry’s newly acquired business, Hutton Industries, minus the company’s former front man, who was involved in a gruesome home invasion that left him blind, deaf, mute and paralyzed.

With no witnesses, leads or proof combined with the botched attempt on his own life during the horrid chain of events, Dmitry is looked over as a person of interest by Scotland Yard and is given carde blache to turn his new private company into his personal money laundering hub right under the public’s nose with the help of his Africa girlfriend, Oxford University senior and business genius, Elsa. And it’s just in time for his new secret alliance with the leaders of a powerful paramilitary sect led by Elsa’s father in Angola, Africa.

Dmitry’s new found power creates a checkmate for his ambitions to be boss but puts a target squarely on his back by not only organized crime heads around the world but also by his own brother, Ivan. Secret alliances are formed. Money is exchanged, and a definite war is looming. Only no one is willing to give up as much as Dmitry is to be king.

Read the last volume of the first book, The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov and witness the heart stopping rise of a giant and everything that he’s willing to do to become the world’s most powerful and deadly boss.

flatecover-3

Volume 5:

After the explosive blow up in Prague, the Medlov men are burdened with the task of returning to business as usual. Dmitry heads to Angola, Africa to help fuel a civil war, and Ivan heads to London to murder the Irish gang, The Sulfux Boys. Only nothing can return back to the way it was before the boys faced Boss Smirnov. Dmitry accidentally unveils Elsa’s plot; Ivan and Arie do the unspeakable, and an old enemy becomes a new ally.

Plots thicken and alliances form in the latest installation of The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov: Volume 5 by national bestselling author Latrivia S. Nelson.

This is by far one of my largest short stories at 245 pages.  But it was fun to write.  Dmitry is a man who knows how to take charge of his organization and he’s proven that, but this story is about the shifting in the atmosphere.  There are alliances that are being formed because of personal interests.  The scum is going to cling to other scum and the good guys (if you can use that terminology with these books) find each other and work on strategy.  We see how depraved our dear Ivan can be and we see Dmitry teetering on some serious affection for Elsa.  This is the transitional story that puts V6-12 in gear.

The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov: V4 Finally Released!!!

It’s been a long time coming, and to all my faithful fans, I do apologize.  Life always gets in the way of my writing plans.  It makes me remember a saying, “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”  During the last quarter, I had planned to drop several books, including V4.  My expectations, however, did not include my husband nearly dying in sleep, kids with insane homework assignments and several family trips, outings and visits.  Not to mention, RiverHouse opened a new office dead smack in the middle of the financial district of Manhattan (NYC).  I have been buuusssyyy.

The good news is that Adam is doing much better.  You don’t realize how special they are until they are nearly taken from you , right beside you.  For that, I am so thankful to my dear sweet savior, Jesus Christ.  The office is working out great in New York and will offer even more opportunities for readers and authors alike who follow RiverHouse and the family visits were awesome.  I saw my cousin for the first time in ten years and it was amazing.  We are even moving to the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area next summer.

But with everything going on, my writing slowed to a pitiful crawl.  Now, I’m back.  And as normal after being pulled away from my work, I am on fire.

I have a lot in front of me.  Saving Anya and The World In Reverse are due out both on Christmas Day.  It will be out no later than December 31st.  Please be patient with me.  If I pull this off, this will be the biggest project that I’ve ever taken on.

Now on to Volume 4 and Book One of the Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov.

This Is Where I Draw The Freaking Line!

I just received the longest email known to man about how horrid my book was (Dmitry’s Closet).  Unfortunately, I had to delete the post.  Why?   It was so long and such a drag until I refused to let it stay up.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m used to getting the occasional email about my work.  And I normally take it in stride.  Countless readers have given me constructive criticism, offered their services and tried their best to help me.  I appreciate them, and I understand their purpose and points.  Some of their words have helped me A LOT.

But when someone sends me a three page letter on why they hated my stuff, I have to draw the line.  First of all, who has that type of time if they have a life?  Now, I did read the blog response. And I know a lot of authors who wouldn’t  have taken the time.  So, at least!!!

Anyway, you guys are my friends and my fans.  So tell me if I’m wrong. I’ll believe you.  But I just can’t take it anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m on my cycle and I am irritable, but maybe there is certain thing called “tact.”  And this email didn’t really have much of it.

If this reader felt so compelled to share her response with just me, then why didn’t she just send me an email?  I post my email everywhere.  Latrivia@LatriviaNelson.com.  And all of you know that I get 100 emails a day. Not all of them are nice, but I take time and I respond.  It’s important to them.  It’s important to me.  And it’s part of being a published author. Not everyone is going to like you.  I get it. I do.

Instead of sending an email, however, she blasts me on my own blog and expects a nice response.  WTF!!!  That, my friends, is bullshit. And I am tired of always being nice.  You don’t come to someone’s house, fart in their living room and call it air freshener. And you don’t go to someone’s blog, basically tell them to quit their day job and call it constructive criticism.  Kiss my ass.

I print out every email.  Good and bad.  I look over them. Study them.  I outline the points that they make, use them to make my work better.  But I’m still a person with feelings.  I know (whine, whine) but I am a person, and I take my work seriously.  If I don’t defend it, who will?

I spend countless hours away from my family, friends and life, doing what I consider to be the best job in the world.  I’m going to have feelings about it.

It’s not easy going after your dreams.  And often, your first, second and even third try can be semi unsuccessful, but I’m proud of the Medlov series.  It’s successful to me.  We have sold over 25,000 copies. I’ve made wonderful friendships as a result, and I’ve faced my fears.  That is so important to me.

Now, there are things that I’m getting better at…like the copyediting element.  And now, I have Karen, and she is awesome.  She’s helping me fix things.  We’re going back and fixing the grammatical errors that made me a leper in the IR genre.  But at least, I’m in the genre.  At least, I’m giving it all that I have.  At least, I’m living my dream.

When I first started out, I thought, I’ll just wait until everything is perfect.  But after Adam nearly died, I realized that no one is promised tomorrow.  I looked at him lying in the hospital bed and knew that there is no perfect time.  There is only right now.  Trust people. This is truth.  Don’t let fear steal your dreams from you.  Fight for them with everything that you have inside of you.

So, I went balls to the wall, and I did it.  RiverHouse was born out of a need to share my voice and my thoughts with the world.  As imperfect as my books  may be, I still did it.  I put it out there, paid a horrid copyeditor, and I published my first book.  Now, I’m on my tenth.  If I should die tomorrow, then at least I will have accomplished something on my list that means so very much to me.  How many people can say that?

I used to think that I had to take the “stuff” that people put out there about me.  But one day I looked in the mirror and realized that I don’t have to take it, and I won’t anymore.

You know what really irks me?  There are some people out there who hide behind their computers, behind these made up names, and these computer-generated photos.  They blast authors, singers, anyone who is trying to express themselves, and they do it anonymously so that they don’t have to face public humiliation after they purposely and maliciously humiliate you.

They pick people apart.  They accuse you of having your friends and family post reviews just because they don’t like your book and couldn’t imagine that anyone else would.  In essence, they call you a freak fraud.

They stomp on your dreams and your aspirations.

They hope that you’ll quit, give up.

Their entire purpose in life is to embarrass you!  But they have never penned a thing, published a thing, had one creative thought in their entire life that they followed through with.

And authors like myself, who put their real picture and name up or authors who use pens names but put their real feelings and dreams into print are forced to deal with what they have said.  And we don’t get to do it anonymously.  We have to face the humiliation just as we are.

They hide behind emails and computers.  We face the world.  Who is really coward?

They go online and posts under several names and give horrid reviews.  And they don’t buy just one book. It’s like they can’t wait for you to release something else so that they can attack that too.

Why?  I don’t know.  They do it though.   And then they curl up in their beds ALONE and sleep all night with a smirky little grin on their faces, because it makes them happy to tear you and your dreams apart.  What a trip!!!!

Well, I don’t have to take it.  I won’t take it anymore.

There are going to be bad reviews.  And women and men who spend their money and their time deserve and opportunity to share their opinions.  I believe that. And I honor that.  I want to hear from them.  I want to be better for them and all my readers.

But I deserve the right to defend myself as well from that “other” type of reviewer – the one who wished that they could have done something else but didn’t, the one who never found the perfect opportunity so she just gave up and spent her entire life being bitter and attacking others.

As an Interracial Romance Author, I get 10-20 emails a week from hate mongers who tell me that I’m not even human and have no right to write about a black woman and white man marrying each other.  I have to hear that my children are an abomination and that I don’t have a soul and should be back on a freaking plantation.  It’s hard enough to try to deal with those idiots.

But on top of that, I get letters from sisters who would rather see me flipping burgers at a restaurant than pursuing my dreams.  I’ve already given the finger to the bigots of the world.  It looks like I’m going to use the other hand to give the finger to you too.

Fifty years from now, if God Almighty sees fit to still bless me with breath in my lungs, I’ll still be writing. I won’t ever quit.  So stop sending me emails and asking me to.  You’re wasting your time and more than that you’re pissing me off.

Do me a favor.  If you are only interested in attacking me, then don’t buy my books.  This is for the entertainment of people who want to do more than tear others down.  I want to hear from them.  I want their criticism, their support – not yours!!!

Latrivia S. Nelson – We’ve Opened Our New Office!

So everyone has been wondering where I have been.  Thanks to everyone who has sent emails to check and make sure that I’m still alive.  I am.  It’s just that this has been the busiest last six weeks of my professional existence.  Many of you know that I am the President and CEO of RiverHouse Publishing.  This is my baby.  In an effort to try to open the doors for more authors like myself who have something to say and not really sure who will listen, I started RiverHouse to provide an opportunity.  As of now, we have five authors and counting, but we’re only just over a year old.

This year, we plan to go after even more authors.  Bold Authors with Bold Statements to be exact.

This last month, we opened our new office in the swank Clark Tower in Memphis, TN.  It’s the tallest building in the city and from my 27th floor executive suite, I can see half of Memphis.  When I first looked down from my windows, I thought to myself that the world is so small and that we as people are so tiny, but we are also capable of amazing things.  Pyramids, the Parthenon, cures for diseases, going to the moon…who knows maybe even world peace one day.  And while, I have created nor done any of the above mentioned, I still felt accomplished that day.

It was only after I got home that and settled into my bed for the evening that I thought about all the work I’d just signed up for.  So, I’ve been working on authors, traveling, attending speaking engagements, participating in book club meetings, writing books, meeting with like twenty people a day at the office, still trying to be a good mom and wife and occasionally cracking open the books to work on my dissertation.  It may sound like I’m complaining, but I’m totally not.  I think this is great, but I know that I have to get back to the things that I enjoy like this blog and my radio show.

Many of you also want to know what is going on with the writing.  Well, I’m happy to report that The Chronicles of Young Dmitry Medlov: Volume 3 will be out this month finally.  This was a hard project this time around, because the fun part about this series is that the stories are short.  However, every time that I worked on Volume 3, it kept getting longer and longer.  So, I had to cut some stuff and leave others while still trying to keep you entertained.  I’m also working on an awesome video with the RiverHouse team to put on youtube for your visual stimulation.

There are also two additional awesome projects that I’m working on for the Lonely Hearts Series.  Filling His Seat will be out in April and Gracie’s Dirty Little Secret will be out in April or May.

You guys know how I hate giving real drop dates, because they always seem to change.  So, I’ll just leave it at that.

Also, in 2011, I have received more fan mail than in the last year combined.  2,000 emails, letters, phone calls and texts.  You guys are amazing.  Your feedback literally is like fuel for this entire thing.

You know my goal is to always entertain you.  We all work every day and need something to pull us away from our lovely lives.  When I’m writing, I’m always thinking of you.  I try to include the things that will make you laugh, make you cry, make you wonder.  That is the great part of being an author.  You get to evoke feelings in people.  For me, the joy of it is evoking happiness.  Everytime one of you guys sends me a note saying how happy you were with the book, my days brightens up.  And I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s true.

Okay, so we have three books on the horizon.  We have a new office to push out more work and on better timelines.

On another note, equally as awesome may I add, Joyfully reviewed did a great review on Dmitry’s Closet.   Joyfully Reviewed is one of the top romance review sites.  Everyone goes there to see what’s new and what’s hot.  So it was a real honor for Nakita Steele to do a review on our favorite Dmitry Medlov.  Also, for those who love Beautiful Trouble Publishing as much as I do, they did a great article on them too.  So congrats, Jayha!

Interracial romance writer gains fans

Nelson makes race a ‘secondary concern’

Suburban mom Latrivia S. Nelson spends time in a fictional place where the Russian Mafia has a Memphis branch.

Nelson’s world has given her a growing fan base as a romance novel writer. She says she has sold more than 7,000 copies of her latest book, “Dmitry’s Closet,” released in early 2010.

Nelson’s novels are books of interracial suspense and romance, involving black women and white men. They’re books she wrote when she couldn’t find interracial romance novels that made race a secondary concern.

“All the interracial romance novels were so based on race,” she said. “Once they got past that one (character) was black and the other was white, it was over.”

While a student at LeMoyne-Owen College, Nelson wrote stories for her friends.

After a short, unsuccessful marriage to her college sweetheart, Nelson met her husband, Adam Nelson, a retired U.S. Marine. The Cordova couple have two children, Jordan, 7, from her first marriage, and Tierra, 4.

The Nelsons married in 2005, and he encouraged her to write. Her first novel, the self-published “Ivy’s Twisted Vine,” came out in 2008.

Other books followed and while he was in Iraq, Adam Nelson’s fellow Marines were curious.

“They said, ‘Is this really about you and her?’ I said, ‘No, it’s not. We don’t have any Russian Mafia friends,'” he said laughing.

Nelson said she tried and failed to find an agent for her first novel. “It just wasn’t happening for me,” she said.

So she started RiverHouse Publishing, defined on its website as a place for “male and female, Caucasian and African-American, affluent and starving writers.”

“Our diversity allows us to explore new frontiers in writing and focus on cutting-edge situational relationships that speak to the inner desires of many fiction readers,” the RiverHouse description says.

“I wanted to be able to give people a voice to be able to get what they feel is important to them out there,” she said.

La-Tessa Montgomery, vice president of the River City Romance Writers Association, knows Nelson’s frustrations.

A publisher Montgomery met with liked the storyline in her interracial romance novel, but passed on the book because she didn’t know how to sell it.

“Meaning she didn’t know how to sell a book by an African-American or with African-American characters,” Montgomery said. “And to further segment that, she didn’t know how to sell a book with an African-American heroine and a Caucasian (male) lead.”

Interracial contemporary romance is a sub-genre in the romance novel world, and big publishers shy away from sub-genres, said Debra Dixon, head of publisher Belle Books, dedicated to “Southern Fried Fiction,” and a co-founder of River City Romance Writers.

Publishers look for broad markets, limiting the opportunities for the “cowboy interracial Christmas time-travel romance,” she joked. But those books still will have fans.

“We have companies that publish black romance, Latino romance, Asian romance,” said Dixon. “So there’s something out there for everybody. You need to find a publisher who can sell that.”
